The Geopyörä is a reliable low-cost breakage characterisation test for geometallurgical mapping, which was conceived and developed at the University of Oulu in Finland. The new test was designed to allow mining companies to better understand the variability of rock strength and minimise risks in comminution circuit design and productivity. The project was funded by Business Finland and carried out by the Oulu Mining School in collaboration with Mechatronics and Machine Design Research Group.


The Team


Members of both the research and business development teams have strong academic and industry experience both in the field of mineral processing and geometallurgy, as well as in mechanical engineering design. The members of the business team have a track history in business development and entrepreneurship.

Dr. Marcos de Paiva Bueno

Project Manager

Senior research fellow at the Oulu Mining School. With more than 14 years of work and research experience in the fields of mining and mineral processing engineering, Dr. Bueno has an in-depth knowledge on the design and optimisation of comminution circuits as well as geometallurgy. He completed a PhD degree at the University of Queensland, specialising in multi-component autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding. He has carried out extensive comminution circuit surveys as well as pilot plant campaigns both in Australia and internationally. Working as a senior process engineer for Ausenco, he has been involved in technical and engineering studies related to most key mining commodities – gold, aluminium, copper, iron ore, nickel, platinum and potash/phosphate.

Prof. Saija Luukkanen

Principal Investigator

Professor in mineral processing at the University of Oulu and Head of Oulu Mining School. PhD in physical chemistry in 2000. More than eight years at the Mineral processing laboratory of Geological survey of Finland in Outokumpu (GTK Mintec); as a group leader of the Flotation and separation group. The main task of the laboratory was (and is) to design the industrial process flowsheets for various types of ores, from the scratch, proceeding from mineralogical characterization to laboratory and further to pilot scale beneficiation test work. The projects were commercial and confidential. Almost 3 years at Lafarge (Centre de Recherche, near Lyon, France) as a project manager. Altogether 2.5 years at consulting and engineering company Pöyry in Finland and Peru, Senior research engineer and Business development director (Mining and metals Business unit).

Dr. Toni Liedes

Prototype design

Head Mechatronics and Machine Diagnostics research unit. He teaches several courses on mechatronics and related subjects in field of mechanical engineering. Dr. Liedes has supervised over 40 Master’s theses and he is currently acting as a second supervisor on three doctoral theses. As a recognition for his efforts in mechanical engineering education Dr. Liedes received a Teaching Award from the Finnish Foundation for Technology Promotion in 2017. He is currently leading several research projects in close co-operation with industrial partners. His research interests include modelling and simulation of machines and their sub-systems, machine related information and communication technology as well as vibration control and agricultural digitalization.

Aimo Savukoski

BD manager

Aimo has exceptional long international Business development and sales experience in past 30 year with 300+ SME and corporate cases. Aimo has successfully contributed to those growth-oriented companies in past 12 year as a management consultant before visiting Spinverse Stockholm corporate sales. His main services are Sales&Marketing, Sales channels, Top management meeting arrangements, Product- and Service strategy creation, implementation of strategies in international business environment, merge and acquisition, Fund rising in Europe and US. He has worked in Sweden, Norway, UK and Russia since early 90’s and lived 9 year in those countries.

Ilkka Hynynen

IPR manager

Mechanical and Construction Engineer Ilkka Hynynen has a long work history as an industrial director, business and innovation director in municipality organization as well as entrepreneur in his own companies. In his own companies Mr. Hynynen has worked as an innovation and developing consultant in Ireland, Lithuania, Greece, Italy Russia, China and in Finland. Since 2006 has worked only for mining companies as a technology and economy consultant and 2011 he started as project manager in Oulu University where he made continuous beneficiation plant 2011-2012 and research Centre (Oulu Mining Research Centre for all ores) 2015-2017. Mr. Hynynen is also inventor and that´s why he works a lot with different kind of industrial inventions, innovations and patents.

The Steering Group


The steering group has been constructed to cover all key aspects of the route to market, including both academics and representatives of the mining and metallurgical laboratory testing industry.

Prof. Malcolm Powell

Professor for Sustainable Comminution JKMRC

Sustainable Minerals Institute University of Queensland. Malcolm worked at Mintek then established the comminution research and consulting groups at the University of Cape Town. He held the Professorial chair in sustainable comminution at the JKMRC of the University of Queensland for 10 years. He aims to link fundamental research into applied outputs through the development of mechanistically correct but practical and robust process models. Malcolm has conducted applied surveying and site optimisation studies on over 60 plants worldwide. His interests cover liner design, SAG mill modelling and control, the unified comminution model (UCM), ore characterisation for multi-component modelling, and flexible circuits – to utilise today’s equipment while enabling the uptake of tomorrows technology. These are published in over 150 articles.

Prof. Holger Lieberwirth

Director at the Institute of Mineral Processing Machines, Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg

Holger does research in crushing and comminution machines, including electric impulse comminution, screening and air separation technologies, palletisation, LCA and recycling technologies. He has expertise in leading and motivating multinational teams in international projects; developing solutions in countries as different as China, Saudi Arabia and Canada; managing key accounts as VALE, Freeport Indonesia, SUEK, Krutrade or Gujarat Ambuja Cement; manage engineering, workshop and sites.

Dr Simon Michaux

Associate Professor at Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) / Geologian tutkimuskeskus (GTK)

Simon has a Bach App Sc in Physics and Geology and a PhD in mining engineering. He has worked in the mining industry for 18 years in various capacities. He has worked in industry funded mining research, coal exploration and in the commercial sector in an engineering company as a consultant. Areas of technical interest have been: Geometallurgy; mineral processing in comminution, flotation and leaching; blasting; mining geology; geophysics; feasibility studies; mining investment; and industrial sustainability.

Dr. Rajiv Chadramohan

Global Technical Director, Operations Optimisation at Ausenco

Rajiv has more than 17 years’ experience in operations, mineral processing research, comminution, materials handling, metallurgical testing and numerical and process simulations.  He has developed a wide range of novel technologies and optimisation methods applicable to the mining industry. He is an industry leader in operations optimisation and has consulted on several global projects and operating mine sites ranging from design to optimisation. At Ausenco, Rajiv leads the Global Operations Optimisation group; providing an integrated optimisation approach driving value in underperforming operations. 

Dr. Jussi Liipo

Experienced Chief Mineralogist at Outotec

With a demonstrated history of working with geometallurgy in the mining & metals industry. Strong professional with a Ph.D. focused in Geology and Mineralogy from University of Oulu, Finland.

Ville Anttila

General manager

General manager at CRS Laboratories Ltd Oy which is a service provider for mining and exploration industry in Scandinavia. Ville has extensive experience in Mining and Mineral exploration with international mining companies.
